Movement
We took a car from our house to the highschool. It was 5.6 miles and it took us 9 minutes. I prepared by bringing rain gear, non cotton clothes, hiking boots, a sleeping bag, and a back pack with binoculars and a sketch book with pencils. After we got to the high school we took a bus to Cardigan Lodge. It took 1 hour and 1 minute, and it was 41.4 miles. After we got to The lodge we unpacked and started our hike.
We saw a hemlock tree once. I wanted to keep a graph of how many squirrels and chipmunks we saw, but I never actually did. I don’t remember how long it took but I remember it being a really easy hike and a narrow trail, with us stopping a lot. There was movement in ideas for cairns. When there weren’t any trees people started to use cairns. I had an idea to make a house there and live their but I thought it was foolish, so I forgot about it. I saw a hemlock tree when we had a break but I forgot to tell the group, It’s needles were not sharp and were soft to the touch, it was about 8 feet tall. Four species of hemlock are found in North America and Eastern Asia. Our counselor was named Garrett and when he dropped a snack he would call it trail spice and eat it. It was the second biggest hike of our 3 days.
After we finished we got free time to do whatever we wanted. Free time didn’t seem that long, but I thought it was still fun. I usually played cards during free time. When we finished free time it was pretty dark so we put on blind folds and walked around in the woods so we couldn’t see, we had to rely on the person in front of us to guide us. Garrett took us far into the trail that we took before. When we got far enough into the woods, he took our blindfolds off and told us about two pirates.
After we got out of the woods we watched the stars. When we finished watching the stars we went to bed. Our beds were different because I slept on a bunk with a sleeping bag, and at home I don’t sleep on a bunk and I have blankets. My roomates were Connor, Tate, and Jack. I finally fell asleep and our day 1 of Cardigan Mountain was over.
